Founding Tenets

Curriculum / Learning:

  • We are anchored in the five pillars of education: academics (IQ), social/emotional development (EQ), creativity, international studies (cultural competencies) and lifelong learning skills.
  • We rotate programs of extended studies that explore individual world cultures and cultural traditions.
  • We create exciting curricula that follows the students’ emerging interests to enhance and enliven the learning experience.
  • We design our curricula integrating what is known about how students learn and how the mind absorbs and processes information.  We make practical and effective use of theories from experts such as Stipick, Kohn, Gardner, Piaget, Erickson, Bronffenbrenner, Skinner, Montessori, Steiner, Bronowsky, Carter and Vygotsky.
  • Our teachers incorporate known content standards in education ensuring every student is prepared for their next step beyond New Mexico Academy of International Studies.
  • We see the wholeness of each student and how each student learns in a unique way. Through observation and assessment we create strategic curricula that meet each student’s individual learning styles, temperament, and interests. We assure individualized learning by limiting class size to 15 students.
  • We believe that learning should be documented so parents can see it.
  • We pursue the inclusion and integration of the arts (performing and visual) throughout the daily curriculum.
  • We provide physical space for movement and exploration that include games, athletics and organized sports.
  • We cultivate respect and honor of our environment. We teach students about our role as care takers of our earth through recycling, composting, gardening, and other eco-friendly activities.

Children / Families

  • We teach and live by these three school rules: Respect for yourself, respect for others, and respect for the environment.
  • We are inclusive and celebrate all types of families! All students are welcome! We admit students of all abilities, races, religions, cultural heritages, ethnicity, gender, or sexual identification.  We make reasonable accommodations to meet the unique needs of all our students. We do not discriminate on any basis in administration of our financial assistance programs.
  • We create the necessary structure for students to feel safe. Within that structure we teach students:
    • To have authentic self-expression.

  • Our teachers and administrators are a priority and are equitably compensated.
  • Our teachers have a voice in decision making at all levels.
